Nollywood actor and former presidential aspirant, Yul Edochie, has found himself at the center of controversy once again—this time for a tribute he shared following the reported death of American wrestling icon, Hulk Hogan.

On Thursday, news surfaced that the wrestling legend had passed away at the age of 71 due to cardiac arrest. Reacting on Instagram, Yul posted a brief message mourning Hogan:
“This one pain.
What a life.
He was our childhood hero.
Rest well, Legendary Hulk Hogan.”
However, the tribute was met with sharp criticism from many Nigerians, who accused Yul of insincerity and clout-chasing. Critics pointed to what they perceived as a contradiction, especially given Yul’s earlier controversial remarks about personal grief.

One user commented, “You said losing your son was the best year of your life, but Hulk Hogan’s death pain you?” Another wrote, “You didn’t mourn Uncle Tom, but you’re here showing fake love for foreign celebrities.”
The backlash highlights ongoing resentment over Yul’s public statements in the past. Following the tragic loss of his son in 2023, Yul described that year as his “best ever,” a comment widely seen as insensitive and tone-deaf.
This is not the first time Yul’s opinions have drawn public ire. He previously attributed the increasing deaths in Nollywood to a decline in traditional values, blaming societal ills on the adoption of Western ideologies. He has also sparked online debates with his posts criticizing unsolicited voice notes and encouraging fans to block those who disturb their peace.

Yul’s public image has also suffered due to personal controversies. His decision to marry fellow actress Judy Austin—while still married to his first wife, May Edochie—drew widespread backlash. May has since filed for divorce, secured full custody of their children, and legally barred him from accessing their former family home.
Judy, for her part, has maintained that her relationship with Yul began after her previous marriage ended in 2013. She has also denied allegations of infidelity, attributing the rumours to online trolls.
